What's Your Favorite?

Ya know how most painters tend to prefer painting one specific type of landscape, or person, or whatever else it is? Well, I'm convinced that writers are the same way. What do I like to "paint" in my writing?

Sunsets. I love figuring out different ways to write that the sun is finishing it's long day of hard work lighting up the world. I've tried to tone them down in my actual manuscript at the risk of sounding redundant, but I still really enjoy writing them. Here are a few samples (One of which is actually the opening line to my novel...can you guess which?):

“The setting sun sprinkled flitters of gold across the crashing waves.”

"The sun’s last rays clung to the city skyline, splashing milky gold across its towering sand structures."

"The sparse trees stood like velvet cutouts as the sun sunk behind the mountain."

Is there one specific thing that YOU really like to write about?

Hm, I like abstract art. So what does that say about me as a writer? :)

I probably tend more toward the sunrise, myself. Your post reminds me of the Augustana line... "I think I need a sunrise, I'm tired of the sunset."
Yeah.

Ooh, I hope #3 is your book opener - outstanding! I enjoy writing about good scents.

Christy - Thanks! But I'm not so sure they have velvet in my ancient fantasy world, so unfortunately no that's not my opening line ;). And yes, good scents are really fun to describe.

Paul - That's funny, especially because as far as colors, etc. go, sunrises and sunsets are pretty identical. Does this make me the glass half empty guy to your half full?

And Corey - Writing about abstract art, eh? That sounds marvelously interesting and challenging. But what it says about you as a writer, I suppose, depends on what type of abstracts you write about :)

I like the second one - is that your opener? They are all lovely.

I'm not sure what I like to paint. Hm. Probably beautiful landscapes. Writing anything from a grassy plain to towering, snow-capped mountains always fills me with peace.

I visited the California Redwoods a year or so ago and I'm dying to incorporate those visuals into a story. I just haven't found the right one.

You are correct, Casey, and thank you. :)

I agree about writing the landscapes, but for some reason I can only write landscapes when they are set in a fantasy world. Even if they are real-world landscapes. Don't know why that is, but I guess it's a good thing I write fantasy!
